SImmetry® & Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

Given the challenging location, biomechanical requirements, and intense loads borne by the sacroiliac (SI) joint, creation of a true SI joint arthrodesis is critical to achieve the best possible patient outcomes. Proper site preparation, including cartilage removal and decortication, is fundamental to promote true intra-articular fusion of the SI joint.

The fundamental principles of true arthrodesis are not new, but they can be challenging in the unique environment of the sacroiliac anatomy. Each step plays an important role in creating a true SI joint arthrodesis:

  • Joint Decortication: The proprietary SImmetry Decorticator allows you to prepare the articular region of the SI joint, creating a debrided area within the SI joint of 27mm.1
  • Bone Grafting: SImmetry facilitates collection and placement of autologous bone within the prepared joint
  • Fixation: A range of threaded implants is available to provide solid fixation during the fusion process.

The SImmetry system provides access to the SI joint using tissue-sparing minimally invasive techniques. By utilizing a lateral access trajectory to the SI joint, the SImmetry system preserves the natural stabilizing structures formed by the sacroiliac and pelvic musculature and ligaments.

The procedure uses 3 basic fluoroscopic views to determine a safe trajectory for placement of implants: inlet, outlet-oblique, and lateral. The streamlined access instrumentation then provides a safe channel for passage of the SImmetry Decorticator into the SI joint space, where the first principle of SI arthrodesis can take place: joint decortication. The unique design of the SImmetry Decorticator allows the cutting blade to track along the uneven surface of the SI joint, while remaining strong enough to remove cartilage and trigger osteogenesis.

Precise placement of bone graft is made possible via grafting instruments that are versatile enough to accommodate any flowable bone graft material, enabling you to mix harvested autologous bone with graft extender and deliver it to the prepared joint.

The SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System allows for controlled insertion of titanium implants over a guidewire. This allows surgeons to tailor the approach to various anatomical structures in an effort to minimize surgical complications when performing sacroiliac joint arthrodesis.
